My partner loves to wear a garland of Christmas lights as a scarf and accessory during the holidays. I made one years ago but it vanished on our last trip. Devasted, they asked for a new one with bigger bulbs so that it's heavier.
I let them rummage through my drawer of scrap yarn ends for the lightbulbs and then used a Loops & threads, Soft & Shiny Back yarn for the "wiring", this one somehow seems to have a green tint under certain lighting so it worked well.
Each bulb is then made from 1 colour of yarn. We aimed to make 2 bulbs of each colour.
Some of the acrylic yarn I had was much thinner than the typical medium weight 4 and that's when I doubled up the strands to work up the bulbs faster. So, depending on what you use, here are the 2 patterns I worked with.
Using 3.50 mm and a single strand of yarn.
R1: mr 4 [4]
R2: (inc, sc) x2 [6]
R3: (inc, sc) x3 [9]
R4: (inc, sc x2) x3 [12]
R5: (inc, sc x2) x4 [16]
R6: sc x16 [16]
R7: (inc, sc x3) x4 [20]
R8: sc x20 [20]
R9: (inc, sc x3) x5 [25]
R10: sc x25 [25]
R11: (inc, sc x4) x5 [30]
R12-16: sc x30 [30]
R17: (dec, sc x4) x5 [25]
R18: sc x25 [25]
R19: (dec, sc x3) x5 [20]
R20: sc x20 [20]
R21: (dec, sc x2) x5 [15]
R22: sc x15 [15]
Finish off and hide tail. Stuff

Finish off and hide tail. Stuff.
In the end this was the colour order of the bulbs, I made 7 bulbs for each side.
Using the black yarn and the 4.50 mm hook, sl st on hook, then work through the last round of your first bulb.
R1: sc in each st all around
R2: Repeat * dec, sc * all around
R3: sc in each st halfway around
Ch x15. Repeat R1-R3 on the next bulb.
After the 7th bulb (or half of your bulbs), ch x40 instead of 15. You can measure if it fits around your neck so the bulbs won't bother you while you wear it. Adjust the number of chains as you desire.
Now repeat the same process for the rest of the bulbs.
Once you reach the end of R3 on your last bulb, simply finish off and hide the tail inside the last bulb.
And a rare picture of me showing off what I made!
