#333 Swablu Crochet Pattern

It constantly grooms its cotton-like wings. It takes a shower to clean itself if it becomes dirty.

Materials

Yarn

Being in Canada, these were the specific brands and colours I was able to find and use for my project:

Blue = Loops & Threads, Impeccable, Clear Blue, Medium (4), 100% acrylic, 127.5g, 260m

White = Loops & Threads, Impeccable, White, Medium (4)

Tools & Accessories

(You may need to resize accordingly if you use a different yarn weight)

Suggested Hook size: 3.50 mm

Safety eyes x2 (diameter 6 mm)

The Pattern

Head/Body

Using blue yarn, and 3.50mm hook.

R1: sc x6 in mr [6]
R2: inc x6 [12]
R3: (inc, sc) x6 [18]
R4: sc x18 [18]

R5: (inc, sc x5) x3 [21]

R6: sc x21 [21]

R7: (inc, sc x6) x3 [24]

R8: (inc, sc x3) x2, sc x4, (inc, sc) x4, sc x4 [30]

R9-10 (2 rounds): sc x30 [30]

R11: sc x21, [ch x5, turn, sk, sl x2, sc x2], sc x9 [30]

R12: (invdec, sc x3) x2, sc x4, (invdec, sc) x2, sc, skip tail, sc, (invdec, sc) x2, sc x2 [24]

Place eyes between R5 and R6, about 4 stitches apart. (Make sure it lines up with the tail directly across the middle of the eyes)

R13: (invdec, sc x2) x2, sc x4, invdec x4, sc x4 [18]

R14: (invdec, sc) x2, sc x2, invdec x4, sc x2 [12]

Stuff.

R15: invdec x6 [6]

Finish off and hide tail.

Wings (make 2)

Using white yarn, and 3.50 mm hook.

R1: sc x6 in mr [6]

R2: inc x6 [12]

R3: sc x12 [12]

R4: (inc, sc) x6 [18]

R5: sc x18 [18]

R6: (inc, sc x2) x6 [24]

R7: sc x24 [24]

R8: (inc, sc x3) x6 [30]

R9-11 (3 rounds): sc x30 [30]

Stuff as you go.

R18: (invdec, sc) x6 [12]

Finish off and leave a long tail (2 feet).

I used black yarn to highlight the stitches in the pictures.

Thread the tail back through the open hole, then come out around R4.
Go back in at the next stitch
You will go in and out 3 other times around R3, so space it out about 1/4 of the round. Pull tight, you should see 4 points dented in
After the 4th hole, repeat the same 4 stitches at R8, make sure you are staggered from the st on R4
The last set of stitches will be on R13
Once everything is pulled tight, come back out through the hole and leave tail for sewing.

Sew one wing on each side of the body.

Crest

Cut a pipe cleaner 4-5 inches long, then fold in half.
- (Some testers who used a bigger hook and chenille suggest cutting the pipe cleaner longer to 5 inches)
Insert into the top of the head so it makes a V.
Thread the blue yarn from the top center of the head and out the back of the body.
Using the active end of the yarn, wrap very tightly all the way up one side of the pipe cleaner, then all the way back down.
Repeat on the other end of the pipe cleaner
Once you get back to the bottom, it gets trickier!
With one hand, hold tight so nothing comes loose, with the other hand cut off the yarn leaving a good amount for you to sew with.
Thread the tail into the darning needle, then bring it in at the top of the head and back out where the original yarn tail is.
Pull tight, tie several knots with the 2 tails together, then tuck inside the body.
Reshape the feathers of the crest as desired

The technique used in this tutorial is the same I used for sewing down the wings and the beak.

Beak

Using white yarn and 3.50 mm hook.

R1: sc x3 in mr [3]

R2: inc x3 [6]

R3: (inc, sc) x3 [9]

Finish off and leave a tail for sewing.
Use the center tail to go out and in at one of the stitches at R1, pull tight, do another stitch at R2. This will make the indent at the bottom of the beak.
Pin the beak in the center of the face then sew in place.

Feet (make 2)

Using white yarn, and 3.50 mm hook.

We will start with Swablu's left foot.

This is worked directly onto the body.

When holding the body with the bum facing you, then work the first stitch of each foot near the top third (as shown in the picture).

sl on hook.

sc (on body where it makes sense and refer to photo), ch x4, turn, sk, sl x2, ch x2, turn, sk, sl, sl in same st as other toe, sl in remaining ch, sl in starting sc, finish off.

I pulled the 2 yarn tails through a lower stitch to tie off and stuff.

Repeat the same for the right foot.
